Nick Finally Held the Baby!

It only took seven months...

Turning 29

We had some friends over the weekend of my birthday for a joint celebration with Jen, who turned 26 (right?) on the 5th. Tommy's still gone to some training somewhere in Louisiana (right?), so it was just the Shasserres, Jen, Tanicia, and Marcus. It was a pretty chill night. We ate and talked until Mason went down for the night, and then we played The Price is Right and Super Mario on the Wii. Nothing too crazy...except when Jen kept killing her teammates on purpose as we played Mario...and laughing maniacally. It got kind of ugly.

The other highpoint of the night was when Mason attacked Miriam's collarbone. I can't explain it in a way that will convey how funny it was, so I'll just post the video (again, when I find the cable!).

I'm SOOOOO Behind...

I know that it's February now, but I still haven't uploaded some of the photos from our Christmas celebrations back home. So here they are, the photos from Christmas with my family and with Chris' dad.

New Developments

So before a lot of kids even have a single tooth, my child now has six. I noticed that he had a new one on the bottom and another one just poking through on the other side last week when I was giving him a bath, and Chris and I despaired of his ever getting teeth on the top. Aren't the top ones supposed to come in after the two bottom ones? Seriously, we were afraid he was going to have to have baby dentures, but then the top right tooth popped through just a couple of days later (whew!). The top left is just visible now, and that makes six.

On a funnier note, Mason learned a new trick yesterday: zerberts. He was slobbering on my arm as we lay in the floor, and he accidentally gave me a zerbert. You should have seen his face! He was a little scared of what he had just done, but I cracked up. I showed him how to do it again, so he did it...on purpose this time, and we both kept doing it for about five minutes and laughing hysterically. Chris was napping on the couch and woke up to see what was happening. I made him get out the handycam, and he managed to get the tail-end before Mason moved on to something else (and Chris fell back asleep). As soon as I can find the cable, I'll upload the video. He's so funny!

Snow! Snow! Snow!

Last Thursday we took our 7th graders on a field trip to the Renaissance Center in Dickson, and all anybody could talk about on the bus ride home was the forecast. We had heard all week that snow was coming in late that week, and bu Thursday morning they were predicting several inches of snow to start falling early Friday morning. Within a few hours of dismissal, the school system (along with all others in middle Tennessee) had already called off school for the next day.

By noon on Friday, we had no snow at all, and I was beginning to think the forecasters had been as wrong as they were about our last big "winter storm." By one, though, the snow arrived, and it fell steadily for the next 18 hours or so. When Mason woke us up just after 5 on Saturday morning, we had about 6 inches of beautiful white snow covering our neighborhood.

After Mason's morning nap (which usually lasts from about 8-9), we bundled him up and rushed outside. I wanted pictures of the perfect white snow before all the neighborhood kids tracked through it. I wasn't sure how he'd react to the cold, but he was intrigued and handled it with his usual aplomb. We only stayed out long enough for some pictures because it was in the 20s, but here they are: Mason's first experience with snow.

Children's Garden

Mason finally went to daycare for the first time on Monday, January 4th. After spending nearly $3000 last year just to keep his place (yeah, we wouldn't have done that if we had realized just how long he would actually not be going...sigh), Chris dropped him off at Children's Garden at 7:30. Meanwhile, I was sitting in inservice meetings and trying not to cry. It had taken me over an hour and a half to get everything packed up and ready for him on Sunday night, and then I had just curled up in the living room floor and managed not to lose it until Chris hugged me. I think that's the closest I've ever come to a panic attack. I had reread all the daycare documents and policies, and I kept telling Chris that I thought we had made a mistake, that we'd chosen the wrong place. It was awful. I must have gotten up a dozen times that night just to watch him sleep, storing up memories for the long day I'd be away from him. Just thinking about it makes me feel terrible all over again.

They were waiting on Mason when Chris walked into the daycare that morning, and he said that Shannon had Mason unpacked and out of the carseat before he even knew what was happening. She wanted to get in some cuddle time before all her older kids (she takes care of the preschoolers while her mom, known as Grammy, watches the babies) arrived, but Grammy soon commandeered Mason, her only baby. Being the only one on Grammy's side, he pretty much gets constant attention all day long, which, of course, is exactly what he's used to! Chris said that the few other kids who were already at daycare were fascinated by the new baby, and Shannon had to review the rules with them: we don't touch the baby, we don't touch the baby's things, we play quietly when the baby's sleeping, etc.

When I arrived at 3:00 to pick Mason up, he was sitting on Grammy's lap surrounded by a ring of toddler girls. Grammy said they couldn't focus on anything but Mason all day. Grammy's granddaughter, Rilynn, who is not quite a year older than Mason, quickly became his little mama, and she loves to bring him his pacifier or a toy he has dropped. Grammy says she'll run from the opposite side of the basement to fetch him whatever she thinks he needs. And likewise, Mason likes to play where he can see over or around the low wall of cubbies and watch what the older kids are doing. Shannon and Grammy call him "Mr. Smiley" for obvious reasons. So, clearly, he's doing well, and I needn't have worried (although I still do, every day). Since he started, we've had 4 snow days (including today), and those have never been more exciting because I get to spend more time with my little guy!
